Miss Plus Size International Beauty Pageant; Zimbabwe Student Wins Title

BIG IS BEAUTIFUL!

Miss Plus Size International

China played host to the Miss Plus Size International to promote the concept “Big is Beautiful” and counter the viral trends on Weibo that views thin women as the ideal such as the A4, skinny legs and iPhone challenges.

Marvon Karidza, Miss Plus Size International 2016

The unique beauty pageant featured 13 contestants, with two entries from China and participants from the U.S., UK, Angola, Gabon, Egypt, India, Portugal, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The venue was the Buhuania Grand Hall Liangmaqiao of the Landmark Hotel in Beijing.

Add caption

"Larger women are usually rejected by other beauty pageants. We want to change the world's perception that only slim women are beautiful" the organizer said. "But we do not encourage or promote obesity, rather it only provides a platform for a plus size women to show they can also be a queens of the catwalk" organizers added.

The contestants wore size 14 or bigger evening gowns, casual wear and business attire. Seventy women expressed a desire to join the contest this 2016, the pageant’s second year compared to 50 in 2015. However, Global Times reported that only 13 full-figured women competed before an audience of 500 locals and expats.

Samantha Sibanda from Zimbabwe, founder of the event, said that they chose China for this year’s competition as venue since it is more difficult being plus-sized in the country because Chinese people are generally smaller. The average waistline of the Chinese woman is 71 centimeters, in contrast to 87.7 centimeters for an Australian woman.

The winner is 26-year-old Marvon Karidza of Zimbabwe. First runner-up is 53-year-old Gao Yiping of China and second runner-up is 31-year-old Tatiana Vederuikova from Russia.

Bb. Pilipinas 2016: Post-Pageant Review

By: En Nepomuceno

Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2016, Maxine Medina

The road to Bb. Pilipinas 2016 crown came to an end last April 17, 2016 where the 25 year-old Maria Mika Maxine Medina won the Miss Universe Philippines crown beating two heavy front-runners; Kylie Verzosa and Nichole Marie Manalo. Medina is an interior designer who graduated from the college of St. Benilde and Philippines school of Interior Design with an experience in designing residential condominiums. She is also an ace in the field of modeling. She was never considered a front-runer but was expected by some pageant pundits to win the top plum.

Medina can be considered as a silent killer. While the crowd went wild cheering for the heavy favorites Kylie Verzosa and Nichole Manalo thinking that either of the two will be crowned Miss Universe Philippines. Medina didn't impressed during the Q&A round but everytime she set foot on stage she made sure to impress everyone by giving all her best and by exuding sexiness with so much appeal.

Back-to-Back WIN

Miss Universe 2015, Pia Wurtzbach

Maxine has now big shoes to fill in. Philippines have placed for 6 consecutive years and eventually won the Miss Universe crown last December courtesy of Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

There is for sure a lot of pressure on her but Maxine is determined enough in hoping for a back to back win.

In her Instgram post yesterday, she said that she will do her best to improve and be pride of the country.

“First of all, I would want to thank God for giving me an opportunity to experience this wonderful journey. I’m proud that I was able to reach at this point because I wanted to do something not only for myself but for my country as well. It was not in my wildest dream that I would be able to become a beauty queen knowing that it's only my first time to join a prestigious pageant such as Binibining Pilipinas. Indeed, I was so nervous last night being in front of thousands of people. It was not that easy to stand and carry yourself but with the help and guidance of the Lord I was able to overcome my fear. Rest assured that I will do my best to improve more and to be the pride of my country. Hopefully, a back to back win with the reigning Miss Universe @piawurtzbach with the help of the Lord. #binibiningpilipinas2016 #maxinatics #missuniverse2016,” the Binibining Pilipinas Universe 2016 said.

Bb. Pilipinas International 2016, Kylie Verzosa

Also with Maxine in the winners' list are Bb. Pilipinas International Kylie Verzosa, Bb. Pilipinas Intercontinental Jennifer Hammond, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational Joanna Eden, Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Nichole Cordoves, Bb. Pilipinas Globe Nichole Manalo, Angelica Alita and Jezha Huelar the first and second runners-up respectively.

Bb. Pilipinas 2016 Queens

Kylie, Nichole Manalo and Nicole Cordoves were among the most applauded girls not because of their supporters but because they gave and impressed the Smart Araneta crowd during the Q&A round.

Aside from the eventual winners, April Smith, Dindi Joy Pajares, Joanna Eden and Kimberle Penchon made it as expected. While the inclusion of the underdogs Vina Openiano, Riana Agatha Pangindian, Roshiela Tobias, Jennifer Hammond and Edjelyn Joy Gamboa came as a surprise. However, Vina, Jennifer and Edjelyn were the pleasant surprise, they were stunning that night though. Winning the Best in Talent and Miss Friendship must have given Vina a passes to the semis and aside from winning the Best in Gown, Jennifer gave a justifibale performance.

DISAPPOINTMENT

Angelique Celine De Leon

Angelique De Leon, Paula Rich Bartolome and Maria Gigante the most talked about candidates and early favorites failed to make the cut despite giving an impressive and solid performance.  It really came as a surprise when they weren't called. What could have been the reason why they didn't make it?

On the other hand, Maria is still young and can make a come back in a year or two while Angelique and Paula will only have next year.

Over-All Impression

Bb. Pilipinas Production number

It was indeed a night full of gleam with surprises which will always happen. One more thing, somehow, everyone if not all get teary eyed when Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach delivered her farewell message and take note, it was live.

The production number, the stage and the effects had improved compared to past years. The swimsuit was way better than it was before. What was amazing that night was seeing our lovely binibinis wearing a filipino designed gowns. The girls were really stunning.

Overall, it was a great night!

To the new queens, good luck on your respective international pageants. Your journey has just begun, keep the winning streak of the Philippines.
