Miss Earth 2017 is Philippines' Karen Ibasco

A 26 year-old licensed physicist, Karen Ibasco was in tears after being crowned Miss Earth 2017 by the outgoing Miss Earth 2016 Katherine Espin of Ecuador. The pageant was held at the Mall of Asia Arena on November 4, 2017.

Ibasco's winning answer for the final question which is, who or what she thinks is the biggest enemy of Mother Earth and why?

“I believe that the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of our ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps because together, as a global community, our micro-efforts will have a macro-effect to help save our home, our planet.”

Ibasco's elemental heroines are Australia’s Nina Robertson as Miss Earth Air 2017, Russia’s Lada Akimova as Miss Earth Fire 2017 and Colombia’s Juliana Franco as Miss Earth Water 2017.

Completing the list of the top 8 are Venezuela's Ninoska Vasquez, Thailand's Paweensuda Drouion, Czech Republic's Iva Uchytilová and Netherlands's Faith Landman. While making it to the top 16 are USA, Tonga, Angola, Guatemala, Vietnam, Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cameroon.

Philippines has won four Miss Earth crowns to date, 2015 Angelia Ong, 2014 Jaime Herrel, and 2008 Karla Henry.
