Catriona Gray from the World to Universe

Miss Universe Philippines 2018, Catriona Gray

Bb. Pilipinas 2018 pageant was held on March 18, 2018 at The Big Dome, Cubao, Quezon City. Unsurprisingly, Catriona Gray, an early favorite was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2018.

A 24-year-old television host, singer, and model, Catriona Gray is the first Filipina to win both the Miss World Philippines and Miss Universe Philippines crowns. She will also be the first woman to compete in these two oldest pageants.

Successful Miss World crossovers to Miss Universe

Miss Universe 1992, Michelle McLean

There was Michelle McLean of Namibia who finished fourth runner-up at Miss World 1991 pageant but was crowned Miss Universe a year after. Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana who was unplaced during the Miss World 1997 pageant but made history as the first back to back victory of ebony beauties in Miss Universe 1999.

There was also Ada Aimee Dela Cruz who was a semi-finalist in Miss World 2007 but won the first runner-up in Miss Universe 2009. Another successful Miss World 2007 semi finalist was Yendi Phillips of Jamaica who also competed in Miss Universe 2010 and finished first runner-up. What about Patricia Rodriguez of Spain who was also a semi-finalist in Miss World 2008 and won first runner-up in Miss Universe five years after.

Miss Universe 2009, first runner-up, Ada Aimee Dela Cruz

How about Olivia Jordan who was a semi-finalist in Miss World 2013 and won second runner-up in Miss Universe 2015.

All these girls don't have much luck during their Miss World stint, however, they were lucky enough when they competed in Miss Universe.

Should we claim Catriona Gray would be another success story of Miss World crossover to Miss Universe?

Catriona Gray was a huge favorite to win the Miss World 2016 crown and had gained sympathies from around the world when she was just announced as third runner-up.

Would she likely have the same fate of Michelle McLean or Mpule Kwelagobe or that of Olivia Jordan, Ada Aimee Dela Cruz, Yendi Phillips, and Patricia Rodriguez?

  1. After reading this article, the big question is "will she be the 4th Filipina to wear the MU crown?"
